It can be a little intense and stressful managing study and work especially in the first year at university. However, it is important to find a way and keep things balanced since both work and study are important milestones in building a successful career personally and professionally.
Below are 3 ways to help manage and balance work life and education:
1. Have a Supporting Community
It is not easy to manage studying and working, but it is also not impossible. Having support around you is a great way to ease the process and carry throughout the academic year smoothly. Support can come from many places; first, make sure that your guardians or family are aware of your situation; it is always better to have people who surround you be understanding towards your situation even if they cannot physically do anything to help. Second, make sure you mention to the staff, administration, and teachers at the university that you are also working – this goes a long way and would help them take into account unpredictable situations occurring. You’d be surprised how much people are willing to do to help.
2. Schedules are your Best Friend
Obviously, managing two things might cause forgetfulness and loss, so in order to avoid this from happening and remain on track, set up daily, weekly, and even monthly schedules. Having a structure and following it will ease the stress and give you a clear picture of what to expect. Most importantly, make sure you stick to the timetable for the best results. It is also a good idea to speak to your lectures about giving you important deadlines and dates beforehand to help manage your time accordingly and appropriately.
3. Keep up with Activities
It cannot be all work and no play! To keep your life balanced it is most definite that you should balance work and study, but it is also crucial to develop interests beyond that. Make sure to plan time for activities that spark up your interests; find a sport, a workshop, a class… anything that would bring some joy, and change into your tight schedule. Do not underestimate yourself and your capabilities, you are good enough to manage all 3 together!
