Tips for a Successful First Year of College

Will lessons from high school be completely upended for some new and mysterious way of doing things? Is it going to be a hard year? Am I going to succeed?
Here are 4 tips to help first-year students ensure their academic success.

1. The first week does matter.
Students frequently believe that nothing significant occurs during the first week. However, this perspective is problematic for a variety of reasons.
Many classes include assignments and critical content right from the start. Remember "You never get a second chance to create a first impression," regardless of the academic subject delivered in those first sessions. That is also true at the start of freshman year.
If you miss class, arrive late, fall asleep, or otherwise fail to participate, you will quickly attract the professor's attention – but not the kind you want. This simply gets the semester off to a bad start.

2. Talk to your classmates
Classmates are collaborators and friends. Studying together, forming test-cramming groups, and even holding venting sessions may all contribute to the sense of camaraderie that makes everything seem more manageable.

3. Life is what occurs when you're distracted by your phone.
You should never use your phone in class, and you should try not to use it too much outside of class.2
Students should be aware of how much study time is swept away by texting, checking Facebook, and uploading images on Instagram

4. Take breaks to avoid breakdowns.
While it may appear that concentrating for lengthy amounts of time is the way to go, studies reveal that professionals (and students) are more productive when they take breaks, pauses are important for refueling and absorbing information.
It's also a good idea to switch up your study or work environment (studies suggest that learning in diverse environments helps the brain remember information).

The first year of college offers numerous changes, and adjusting can be difficult. These emotions are natural; in fact, hundreds or thousands of other freshmen are probably feeling the same way. Remember that there are many people around you who want to see you succeed, so reach out if things seem too challenging.
With a little assistance and patience, you'll soon be a self-assured college student.
