With one in every four first-year students changing courses or leaving university, it pays to spend time carefully evaluating courses. The following are a few aspects to consider while deciding on the best course for you.
Skills and careers of the future
Some of you will be working in fields that have yet to be invented. It is absolutely OK, and even desirable, to have various interests. It is not necessary to know what you want to accomplish with your life at the age of 18. With the growing popularity of double degrees and professional graduate degrees, you will have several options to expand your interests and talents while studying, working, and volunteering.
Many students wonder if they should choose courses that are related to vocations or industries that are expected to develop in the future. Absolutely, but only if these occupational areas actually interest you and are a good fit for your abilities, as this is a wise and educated decision. Choose a professional path that you are not interested in simply because you believe you should or because it is prestigious.
Avoid choosing a course to please others or for prestige.
Many students enroll in courses to impress others (typically their parents) or because they are feeling the pressure. Consider your options carefully, as such judgments might have long-term consequences. Examine your reasons thoroughly and be honest with yourself.
